to behind the curtain:How to be a wise research consumer

In academia, and specifically science, one of the goals is to challenge ideas. By challenging old ideas, we build upon them with new information, sources, and greater knowledge of the world we live in and the people who inhabit it. Without this drive to put forward new ideas and dispute how research has carried on, we would not have advances in medicine and the understanding of the human mind that we have today (though we have a far way to go). Though these problems exist in varying degrees within many fields, this website will focus on the problems within psychology research.

In psychology, there has recently been recognition of researchers who are challenging how much needs to change in the field, from the replication problem, to use of the WEIRD population and p-hacking. For reasons to be further explained, decades of established psychological theories have been called into question.

Why does this matter? While this news may only seem relevant to those within the discipline, the world is exposed to new research findings every day by way of the internet and television.  The news doesn't just fall by the wayside - it shapes and changes how we see ourselves, others, and the world. In order to truly address the mounting problems in psychology research, everyone should be made aware of the power they have to determine where the truth ends and the limitations begin.
